Diplomatic relations with Japan were reestablished in 1952. They have been maintained at Ambassador's level. Both countries' Ambassadors are resident in Tokyo and Belgrade, respectively.

Serbian Ambassador to Japan, H.E. Mr. Ivan Mrkić, presented his Letters of Credence to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito on October 25th 2006. Ambassador of Japan to Serbia, H.E. Mr. Toshio Tsunozaki, presented his Letters of Credence to the President of Serbia on February 13, 2009..

Republic of Serbia and Japan maintain friendly relations and cooperation. Political dialogue has been strengthened through exchange of numerous visits of high ranking officials from both countries. Serbia considers Japan one of its most important partners in Asia. It highly appreciates Japan’s support and assistance to the strengthening of democratic institutions, social reforms and economic recovery of Serbia. Japan is one of the biggest donors to the Republic of Serbia, whose donations exceed 200 milion USD.

Treaty Status

Upon the normalization of relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on 20 May 1997, the two countries exchanged letters confirming that all bilateral treaties and international agreements which had been concluded and effective between former Yugoslavia and Japan, continue to be in force. The letters of similar content were exchanged following the independence of Montenegro, confirming that all bilateral treaties and international agreements signed between the state union of Serbia and Montenegro and Japan are effective between the Republic of Serbia and Japan. Among the agreements effective between the two countries are the Agreement on Cultural Cooperation, signed in 1968, the Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology, signed in 1981, and the Agreement on Tecnical Cooperation, signed in 2005.
However, although the Agreement on the Waiver of a Visa Requirement for Holders of All Passports is still valid, Japan has unilaterally introduced visas for citizens from Serbia.

Parliamentary League of Friendship

Parliamentary League of Friendship was officially established in the House of Representatives of the National Diet of Japan on December 12, 2000. It succeeded the Study Group for Yugoslavia, which existed in the Parliament from 1998. The President of the League is Mr. Ichiro Aisawa, member of Liberal Democratic Party and Chairman of the Committee on Budget of the House of  Representatives. The League consists of the members of both House of Representatives and House of Councilors, from the Liberal Democratic, New Komeito, as well as from the Democratic Party of Japan.

 

Decorations & Awards

The Republic of Serbia decorates ambassadors and diplomats of Japan to Serbia, as well as other personalities from Japan, for their extraordinary achievements in promoting friendship and bilateral relations in various fields.

 

2002
Noriaki Owada, former Ambassador of Japan to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1998 – 2001), was decorated the Yugoslav Star of the First Degree on 31st of October 2002 in Tokyo.

 

2004
Koiichiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO, was awarded in 2004 with the Order of Vuk Karadžić of First Degree, for personal contribution and achievements in support for presevation of Serbian cultural heritage, especially in Kosovo and Metohija.

Yoshiki Mine, former ambassador of Japan to Serbia and Montenegro (2001-2003), was bestowed with the Yugoslav Star of the First Degree on April 6, 2004 in Tokyo.

 

2005
Ryuichi Tanabe, former ambassador of Japan to Serbia and Montenegro (2003 to 2005) was decorated The Yugoslav Star of the First Degree in Belgrade.

 

2006
Kazuo Tanaka, professor and interpreter, was awarded with the Order of Vuk Karadžić of Second Degree on April 26th, 2006 in Tokyo, for his overall work in the field of translation of Serbian literature into Japanese language and significant contribution in strenghtening cultural ties between the two countries.
